Shark Bay is a vast, remote World Heritage area on the westernmost tip of Australia, where red desert meets turquoise sea. It's one of only a handful of places in the world to hold all four natural UNESCO criteria, and home to wild dolphins, dugongs, ancient stromatolites, and beaches made entirely of tiny white shells.
Things to Do
Visit Monkey Mia at dawn to watch the famous wild bottlenose dolphins come into the shallows for a ranger-supervised feeding, a tradition going back decades. Walk the boardwalk at Hamelin Pool to see the stromatolites — living microbial structures that are some of the oldest life forms on Earth. Drive out to Shell Beach, a 70-kilometer stretch made entirely of tiny cockle shells, and take a swim in the warm shallow water. Hike or 4WD into Francois Peron National Park to see red sand dunes meeting brilliant blue sea at Cape Peron, and look out for dugongs, turtles, and rays from the Eagle Bluff viewing platform.
Best Time to Visit
April to October is the best time — sunny days, comfortable temperatures (mid-20s°C), and the best chances to see dugongs and migrating whales (June–November). Summer (December–February) can be very hot, often over 40°C, and many activities become uncomfortable in the midday heat.
Where to Stay
The main town is Denham, a small but well-equipped base with restaurants and supermarkets, while Monkey Mia is a small resort on its own peninsula 25 minutes away.

Getting Around
Shark Bay is genuinely remote — about a 9-hour drive (830 km) north of Perth, or a short flight to Monkey Mia Airport from Perth. A car is essential to explore the peninsula; a 4WD is needed to enter Francois Peron National Park. Distances between sights are long, so fuel up whenever you can.
Hidden Gems
Cape Peron, at the northern tip of Francois Peron National Park, is the most spectacular spot in the region and almost no one is ever there — climb the dune above the cliffs at sunset for red rock, white sand, and turquoise ocean stretching as far as you can see. Also worth doing: book a sailing catamaran trip out of Monkey Mia in the late afternoon — you'll often see dugongs, turtles, and sea snakes from the boat, and watch the sun set over the Indian Ocean from the water.
