Riyadh Travel Guide

Saudi Arabia

Middle East

Riyadh is not a city most travelers think to visit, and that's exactly why you should. Saudi Arabia's sprawling capital is in the middle of a rapid cultural transformation, but the real draw for adventurous travelers lies just outside the city: the Edge of the World, one of the most dramatic and least-visited natural landscapes in the Middle East. Riyadh is your base camp for one of the great undiscovered day trips on earth.

Things to Do

The Edge of the World (Jebel Fihrayn) is the centerpiece, a jaw-dropping escarpment rising 300 meters above the Tuwaiq plateau, offering uninterrupted views across an ancient seabed that stretches to the horizon. It takes about 1.5 hours to drive from Riyadh, followed by a short hike across rocky desert terrain. There are no guardrails, no crowds, and no entry fee, just raw, untouched landscape. Back in the city, the historic Diriyah district (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) offers a look at the mud-brick birthplace of the Saudi state, and the National Museum gives essential context on the region's pre-Islamic and Islamic history.

Best Time to Visit

October through March is the only practical window, daytime temperatures drop to a comfortable 15–25°C, making the Edge of the World hike enjoyable rather than dangerous. Summer in Riyadh is extreme, with temperatures regularly exceeding 45°C. The Edge of the World is best visited on a clear day after recent rainfall, when the desert floor takes on a dramatic red hue.

I went during August...it was about as hot as you'd expect!

Where to Stay

The Al Olaya and King Fahd Road corridor is Riyadh's main business and hotel district, with easy access to the city's restaurants and the highway toward the Edge of the World. For atmosphere, the emerging Al Ula Road and Diriyah area offers newer boutique options closer to the historic district. Given Riyadh's size, staying near where you plan to spend most of your time is worth prioritizing, the city is vast and traffic can be significant.

Budget: Boudl Al Tahlia, reliable Saudi mid-budget chain on Tahlia Street, well-placed for restaurants and the city center.
Mid-range: Crowne Plaza Riyadh RDC, comfortable, well-located four-star near the diplomatic quarter with a good pool.
Luxury: Four Seasons Hotel Riyadh at Kingdom Centre, occupies the lower floors of the Kingdom Tower, with the Sky Bridge directly above.

Hidden Gems

Most visitors to the Edge of the World turn around at the main viewpoint, but following the escarpment ridge in either direction reveals even more dramatic drops and fossil-embedded rock formations from when this plateau was the floor of an ancient ocean. Back in Riyadh, the Musmak Fortress in the old city center is a remarkably well-preserved 19th-century mud-brick fort, and the surrounding Qasr al-Hokm district is one of the few areas where the old urban fabric of Riyadh survives intact.
