Valparaíso is Chile's great Pacific port city — a chaotic, colorful tangle of hillside neighborhoods (cerros) connected by funicular elevators and stairways, covered in some of the best street art in the world. The historic old quarter is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the city's bohemian energy has long made it a magnet for poets, artists, and travelers.
Things to Do
Wander the steep, mural-covered streets of Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción, two of the most photogenic neighborhoods in South America. Ride a few of the historic ascensores (funicular elevators) that have been hauling locals up the hills since the 1800s. Visit La Sebastiana, the eccentric hillside home of Nobel laureate poet Pablo Neruda, with sweeping views over the bay. Stroll the working harbor and Plaza Sotomayor, take a boat tour of the port to see Chilean Navy ships and sea lions, and spend an afternoon in nearby Viña del Mar for beaches and casinos.
Best Time to Visit
October to April (Southern Hemisphere spring/summer) is the most pleasant — warm sunny days, cool evenings, and very little rain. December to February brings peak crowds and the best beach weather in nearby Viña del Mar. The city is known for its enormous New Year's Eve fireworks show over the harbor. Winter (June–August) is mild but often grey and damp.
Where to Stay
Stay on Cerro Alegre or Cerro Concepción for the best concentration of cafes, restaurants, viewpoints, and street art — and skip the lower flat city (El Plan), which is grittier and less safe at night.
Budget: Hostel Cerro Alegre, a clean, sociable hostel with private and dorm options right in the heart of the bohemian quarter and stunning rooftop views.
Mid-range: Hotel Acontraluz, a charming boutique guesthouse on Cerro Alegre with stylish rooms, a small pool, and an excellent in-house restaurant.

Getting Around
Valparaíso is about 1.5 hours by bus from Santiago, with frequent comfortable services from Pajaritos terminal. It makes an excellent day trip from Santiago, easily done in a day. On the drive you pass through the Casablanca Valley, one of Chile's most celebrated cool-climate wine regions, known for its Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Within the city, walking the hill neighborhoods is the experience itself, but the gradients are very steep — take the historic ascensores wherever you can and use Uber for longer hops or after dark. Stick to the main tourist hills at night and keep valuables out of sight; petty theft is common in lower areas.
Hidden Gems
For the best street art, take a guided walking tour with a local artist — they'll show you murals (and their stories) tucked into staircases you'd never find on your own. Have a long Chilean seafood lunch at Caleta Portales, a working fish market just east of the center, where stalls upstairs serve the freshest ceviche and fried fish in town. Also worth seeking out: a sunset pisco sour on the terrace of Fauna Hotel or the rooftop bar at Casa Higueras for the most dramatic harbor view in the city.
