Jodhpur is the Blue City of Rajasthan, a sprawling desert metropolis where thousands of indigo-painted houses crowd beneath the towering walls of Mehrangarh Fort. With its dramatic skyline, bustling clock-tower bazaars, and Rajput palaces, it's one of the most visually stunning cities in India.
Things to Do
Spend a half-day exploring Mehrangarh Fort, one of the largest and best-preserved forts in India, with sweeping views over the blue old town and an excellent museum of royal armor, palanquins, and Rajput art. Wander the maze of indigo-painted lanes of the old city below the fort — the colors are most vivid in the Brahmpuri district. Visit Jaswant Thada, a delicate marble cenotaph just outside the fort walls. Shop for spices, textiles, and silver in the chaotic Sardar Market around the iconic Ghanta Ghar clock tower, and tour the imposing Umaid Bhawan Palace, one of the world's largest private residences and still home to the Jodhpur royal family.
Best Time to Visit
October to March is by far the best time — pleasantly warm days and cool evenings, perfect for exploring the fort and walking the old city. April to June is brutally hot in the Thar Desert (often 45°C+), and the monsoon (July–September) brings humidity but very little rain. Try to align your visit with the Marwar Festival in October or the RIFF music festival inside Mehrangarh in late October. For an unusual window, visit just after the monsoon, in August and September, when green patches scatter across the normally arid Thar Desert — a rare sight in this landscape.
Where to Stay
Stay in or just below the old city for the most atmospheric experience — many small heritage havelis offer rooftop views directly onto Mehrangarh Fort.
Budget: Hostel Lavanya, a popular guesthouse with rooftop views of the fort, friendly staff, and excellent home-cooked Rajasthani thalis on the roof at sunset.
Mid-range: RAAS Jodhpur, a stunning heritage boutique hotel built into the old city walls with a swimming pool framing direct views of Mehrangarh — one of the best heritage stays in Rajasthan. I stayed here myself: the service was second to none and the food exceptional, a standout luxury heritage stay.
Luxury: Umaid Bhawan Palace (Taj), still partially the home of the royal family, this art deco palace is one of the world's most iconic hotels — opulent suites, vast gardens, and a museum inside.

Getting Around
Jodhpur Airport has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, and other Indian hubs, and the city is well connected by overnight trains from Delhi, Jaipur, Udaipur, and Jaisalmer. Within the old city, walking is the only realistic option — the lanes are too narrow for cars. Auto-rickshaws and Uber/Ola handle the rest. Many travelers combine Jodhpur with Udaipur (5 hours by road) and Jaisalmer (5–6 hours into the Thar Desert).
Hidden Gems
For the best fort views, skip the standard viewpoint and head up to the rooftop of any guesthouse in the Navchokiya neighborhood at sunset — the blue houses glow and Mehrangarh turns gold. Try a makhaniya lassi at Mishrilal Hotel inside Sardar Market, often called the best lassi in India. Also worth seeking out: a behind-the-scenes royal cooking class at one of the heritage havelis, or a sunset rooftop dinner at Indique restaurant for the most cinematic view of Mehrangarh you'll find in town. And for a different angle on the desert entirely, take a day trip out to Osian, an ancient temple town that offers a fresh look at the Thar.
