Kuala Lumpur Travel Guide

Malaysia

Southeast Asia

Kuala Lumpur is a genuine three-way blend of Malay, Chinese, and Indian culture, and you can read that mix in its food, its temples and mosques, and its neighborhoods. It is also a city of records: the Petronas Twin Towers, the tallest twin towers in the world, and Merdeka 118, the second-tallest building on Earth. I have been to KL twice and keep planning to go back. This is the food, the skyline, and the day trips that make the case.

Scenes from Kuala Lumpur, captured on my trips.

I have been to Kuala Lumpur twice now, and I already know I will go back. KL is one of those cities that rewards return visits: a genuine three-way blend of Malay, Chinese, and Indian culture, a skyline that has rewritten the record books twice, and food that runs from street stalls to the world's most expensive durian. My take, for what it is worth, is that the city is notably clean and offers strong value for the money.

What makes Kuala Lumpur a three-culture city?

KL's identity is a real three-way blend of Malay, Chinese, and Indian culture, and it shows up everywhere: in the food, in the religious sites, and in the neighborhoods. The clearest way to taste it is Jalan Alor, the famous night food street in the Bukit Bintang district, where the stalls fire up after dark and the whole street turns into one long open-air kitchen. For a different side of the city, walk through Chinatown, which also happens to have great views of Merdeka 118, the second-tallest building in the world.

How tall is Merdeka 118?

Merdeka 118 is the second-tallest building in the world at 678.9m, behind only the Burj Khalifa. It was completed in late 2023 and opened in January 2024, and it is the tallest building in Malaysia and in Southeast Asia, with the highest observation deck in the region. From Chinatown you get a clean line of sight to it rising over the older city below.

Are the Petronas Twin Towers still worth seeing?

The Petronas Twin Towers opened in 1999 at 451.9m and were the tallest buildings in the world until 2004. They still hold one title outright: they remain the tallest twin towers in the world. The double-decker skybridge that links them at level 41 is the highest two-story bridge in the world. For the best view of the towers and the skyline, skip the ground-level crowds and go up: SkyBar and Fuego at Troika both look straight across at the towers, and the view from either is stunning.

What is Batu Caves?

Batu Caves is a limestone cave complex roughly 400 million years old, about 13 km north of the city. The gold Lord Murugan statue at its base stands 42.7m (140 ft) tall, was unveiled in 2006, and is the tallest statue in Malaysia and one of the tallest Murugan statues in the world. Behind it, 272 steps, repainted in rainbow colors in 2018, climb to the temple cave. The site is the focal point of the Thaipusam festival.

Where was Malaysian independence declared?

Merdeka Square, Dataran Merdeka, is where Malaysian independence was declared in 1957. It recently went through renovations, which I noticed on my last visit, and it is an easy stop to pair with Chinatown and the older core of the city.

Should you try durian in Kuala Lumpur?

Yes, and KL is one of the best places on Earth to do it. Malaysia's signature variety is the Musang King (D197), a premium cultivar that has been dubbed the "Hermès of durians." Malaysia competes on quality rather than volume: its durians command far higher prices than Thai or Vietnamese fruit, and a single top-grade Musang King can fetch up to around US$100 in China. I had durian at Dking KLCC and it was incredible, though not cheap at roughly US$32.

Is Genting Highlands worth a day trip?

If you have the time, Genting Highlands is a worthwhile add-on. It sits in the hills above the city, the air is cool, and the ride up gives you views looking down over Kuala Lumpur. Treat it as an experience rather than a headline sight, and slot it in only if your schedule has room.

Where to Stay

I stayed at the Ritz-Carlton, a large property with plenty of amenities and, just as welcome in this climate, strong air conditioning. Bukit Bintang is a practical base in general: it puts you within reach of Jalan Alor, the rooftop bars, and the train links across the city.
